Book New Game! Vol. 1 Review :

I quite enjoyed the anime adaptation - two seasons so far - of the manga *New Game*. It's a funny and sweet series about a girl fresh out of high school starting her new job at a video game company as a character designer. Her enormous talent, as well as some other factors, allowed this to happen.Naturally, when I learned that this original manga was licensed for English release by the folks at *Seven Seas Entertainment*, I knew it was something I was going to pick up to read. Now that I have, I can lay out both the good and the bad.The good is fairly obvious, as the source of the anime, this is a sweet and funny story. It really makes you like the characters, and draws you in on their daily antics. Of course, this is as it should be for any slice of life series. There is some bad here as well, to be sure. First off, when it comes to any adaptation, it is possible to present the characters *juuust* slightly differently enough to come across better than here in the source material. So it was here with Yagami Kou. She is not a bad person at all in the manga, and is basically the same character as the anime, but she was tweaked. She can be slightly jerkish at times in both version, but the anime version, I noticed, was slightly nicer than the manga one. In fact, the few instances of her being a jerk (not a major one but just slightly so) were more subdued in the anime. So one thing that folks might deal with is that in the source material, Kou can verge a bit on being snotty or mean. Not much so, but somewhat. The next part is what I think that I noted when reviewing *Flying Witch*. That is how the art and the background elements can make the anime much better than the original manga, even when said original manga is almost word for word, and scene for scene, the same story, dialogue, etc. In the anime, the art is more impressive, as are the other elements also added to the adaptation. For that matter, even though the same elements happened, there was a slight change in focus via some small differences in presentation. This lead to the anime - while still mainly focusing on Aoba - being more of an ensemble story than the manga. The original manga still has some ensemble elements, but is mainly about Aoba, rather than about all four of the girls in her workspace, and others too. This change made the anime more interesting as it broadened the sense of the series, and made the characters seem like the interesting personalities they are, and not just folks seen through Aoba's eyes.It might sound like I didn't enjoy this at all. If that is the sense folks get, I tell you that this is not so. I did enjoy this, quite a lot. I didn't as much as the anime, to be sure, but this material as the source has all of the good things of the anime, and the bad, but with a different focuses. In many instances, the manga really and truly *is* better than the anime, in this case though, it's not. But while I prefer the anime much more, this doesn't at all take away from the sweet and wonderful read this manga is, and from the fact that I truly enjoyed it.So please, yes, I urge you to watch the anime, which is even better, but I also urge you to read this manga. The characters, whether Aoba, Yun, Hajime, Hifumi, Kou or Rin, are all fun. And we get the first look at Nene. I hope Umiko's soon to follow. The sweetness of their day to day lives, and the humor of the situations they are in, make it a truly enjoyable and soothing read.Rating: 4/5 Stars.
A very cute slice-of-life about a girl starting out in the video game industry as a character designer.I don't expect a whole lot of story from slice-of-life stuff (especially 4koma-style manga) apart from relationship building and inter-personal conflict, so I wasn't disappointed to find there is pretty much no story apart from "Aoba meets her co-workers and starts building friendships." This being the case, it falls on the characters and their interactions to carry everything, and so far I adore the characters AND their interactions! Also, Aoba's friggin adorable.
