3 and a half stars, 4 for the enjoymentWhat was with that sudden stop ending? Really caught me off guard. "I think that person is the murderer!" *roll credits*Honestly though, this was an enjoyable read! Middle-aged mystery writer attends a writer's retreat in order to try and convince his publisher to keep him. Writer is going through a midlife crisis. Writer encounters an old flame who now hates him. Writer also stumbles across a body in the woods and becomes a murder suspect. This was a fun "who-done-it" murder mystery with a bit of romance thrown in. I was admittedly expecting something a bit different with the series being titled Holmes and Moriarty (totally my own fault), but once I realized what the author was going for I was able to appreciate the characters for who they were.My qualms with the book didn't lie with the writing. The writing was rather enjoyable (even when every other sentence seemed to include some simile or cultural reference). What I did not enjoy was how women were portrayed in this book - Espie and the chick-lit ladies in particular. This isn't a book about women or with a focus on women so I wasn't expecting deeply compelling and complex female characters. But I also wasn't expecting nearly every description of women involving some sort of stereotype or cliche. I'm not a fan of chick-lit either so I don't mind a bit of clash between genres/styles for the sake of humor but it all really fell flat for me. And Espie, while a character I wanted to like, fell prey to straight-up "tough Latina" stereotyping. I acknowledge this book wasn't written in our current age of public correctness or that these wouldn't be the thoughts of a fourty something man in the early 2000s who is angry that chick-lit is taking over the publishing industry. I think I was really thrown for a loop because I've read so many M/M and LGBT+ romances where - even if the protagonists identify male - the women are more than high heel and pink top wearing, Prada bag toting scenery.I still recommend this book, because for all the faults I found with certain portrayals it's still a compelling read and I am eager to see what happens next. Another well-written novel by Josh Lanyon.Christopher Holmes is a well-established cozy mystery writer but lately, Sales have been slipping, and his new editor Stephen "Satan" Krass ( and he lives up to his name), is threatening to drop him so Kit's agent convinces him to go to a mystery retreat Krass is attending and subject a proposal for a new series. Kit doesn't like to attend conventions, retreats, or anything else involving large numbers of people but he ends up going anyway. Immediately upon arrival, Kit discovers a body in the woods and while everyone's recovering from that, Krass is also murdered. A winter storm is settling in and there's no way for the local authorities to get to the retreat...and it goes downhill from there. Also in the group is JX Moriarity, a well-establish, bestselling writer of crime noir and someone Kit had a 3-day fling with a decade before. Though it was obviously the most special 3 days of his life, Kit never saw JX again, but now, here he is, and the attraction for both never died.Together, Holmes and Moriarty will not only solve the crimes, but, with ten years behind them, will rekindle those three days into something more permanent.I've always like Josh Lanyon's works and this new series is no exception. There's just enough lightheartedness to keep the story from being too, too noir, yet the details of the killings is there without wallowing in blood and gore. The two main characters balance each other well. Kit is the one who generally leaps without looking, though he's well aware he should and sometimes he doesn't always land on his feel. JX is the more level-headed, offering stability to the story that the more emotional (internally, at least) Kit doesn't possess, and the way they feel for each other, even after a decade apart is great.Great story, great new characters.I discovered this novel by accident and have gone on to buy the rest of the series. Great Serendipity! This novel was an Amazon purchase and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review.
